Orbán Steps Down from Hungarian Parliament After Historic Election Defeat

Viktor Orbán, Hungary's dominant political figure for over a decade, announced on Saturday that he would not take up his seat in parliament following a landslide election defeat. The result marks a dramatic fall for one of Europe's most controversial and enduring leaders, who transformed Hungary's political landscape while repeatedly clashing with EU institutions over rule of law, media freedom, and Hungary's stance on the Russia–Ukraine war.

Orbán's defeat carries implications well beyond Hungarian politics. His government was the main obstacle to unified EU support for Ukraine, repeatedly blocking or delaying aid packages. His exit could pave the way for a warmer Hungarian relationship with Brussels and NATO partners, and potentially ease some of the diplomatic logjams that have complicated Western policy on the war.

The transition will not be smooth: Orbán leaves behind a deeply polarized country and a political system he substantially reshaped in his own image. His successor will need to navigate a complex balance between domestic Fidesz loyalists and a newly mobilized opposition. Nevertheless, across European capitals, the news has been welcomed as a potential turning point — both for Hungary's democratic trajectory and for the coherence of European institutions.
