Georgia's Democratic Crisis Deepens: EU Ambassador Warns of 'Dark Past' Return, Former Minister Jailed

Georgia's European integration path looks increasingly uncertain after EU Ambassador Paweł Herczyński warned at a Brussels event that the country risks returning to a "dark past." Georgian Dream officials responded with outrage, floating the idea of summoning the ambassador to the Foreign Ministry — a significant diplomatic escalation.
The warning coincided with the sentencing of former Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze to ten years in prison on charges of abuse of office and large-scale money laundering. Several properties were confiscated. Opposition figures and civil society groups have characterized the sentencing as part of a broader crackdown on former officials critical of the ruling party.
Other notable incidents this week: a former State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) employee working at the Interior Ministry was arrested on suspicion of taking classified documents from the SSSG; and a court in Tbilisi terminated journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli's defamation lawsuit against Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze without ruling on its merits. Together, these developments paint a picture of mounting pressure on independent institutions in a country that once seemed on a clear path toward EU membership.
