The well-known Portuguese specialist, Fernando Santos, has been released from his position as head coach of the Azerbaijan national team.
This decision was made after the Azerbaijani team's loss to Iceland in Reykjavík on September 5th during a match in Group D of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
A press conference with Santos was scheduled for today, ahead of the team's second qualifying match against Ukraine in Baku on September 9th. However, the Portuguese specialist did not appear at the event. Instead, AFFA's Secretary-General, Jahangir Farajullayev, came and announced the departure of Santos.
"Today, the AFFA Executive Committee terminated the contract with Fernando Santos by mutual agreement. The team will be led by Aykhan Abbasov (the head coach of the youth team) for tomorrow's match," said Farajullayev.
Santos took charge of the Azerbaijan national team on June 12, 2024.
Under his leadership, the team played 11 matches, losing 9 and drawing 2.
