Activist and English instructor Dayanat Chalabiyev appeared in front of a judge on May 21 at the Baku Serious Crimes Court. He was taken into custody for condemning government policies, including those of the president in the media.
Chalabiyev's attorney, Agil Layj, submitted requests throughout the trial. He requested that the court terminate the case. The attorney stated that Chalabiyev did not engage in any criminal activity. He noted that the expert opinion was provided four months following Chalabiyev's arrest. The defense inquired, "How was it determined that he harmed someone if the opinion came out four months later?"
The attorney further asked for Chalabiyev to be subject to house arrest if the case was not concluded. He mentioned that Chalabiyev is responsible for his family and has small children. Nonetheless, these requests were denied.
The defense subsequently inquired whether Chalabiyev could sit beside his lawyer instead of in a glass enclosure. They stated that this aligns with rulings from the European Court of Human Rights. Would allow Chalabiyev to communicate with his lawyer without difficulty. The court overlooked this request.
