Ukraine has officially asked Turkey to host a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is a move by Ukraine to try and talk directly with Russia. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said Ukraine has reached out to Turkey and other countries to help them talk and end the conflict.
Ukraine wants Turkey to help them talk to Russia. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said Turkey is willing to help. He met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Said Turkey wants to help Ukraine and Russia talk.
Ukraine does not want to talk in Russia or Belarus. They do not want to talk in Belarus because it was used as a place to start the war in 2022. They want to talk in a place like Istanbul. Istanbul has been used before for talks.
Russia is being careful. They say they are open to talking but they need to do some work before a meeting. Russia wants to host talks in Russia. Ukraine does not want that.
The talks might not just be between Ukraine and Russia. There might be countries involved. Ukraines Foreign Minister said it could be a meeting with Turkey, Ukraine, Russia and the United States.
Even though its hard to get an agreement there have been some steps towards talking. There was a prisoner exchange over Easter. 175 People from each side went home with the help of the UAE. This shows that even though its hard countries are still trying to talk.
Turkey is still the place, for these talks. It can help Ukraine and Russia talk. Maybe find a way to end the war.
