A new wave of legal action by an imprisoned Azerbaijani investigative journalist against pro-government media, coupled with ongoing protests over harsh prison conditions and unfulfilled promises for his colleagues, highlights the severe challenges faced by independent journalism in the country. This comes on the heels of recent lengthy prison sentences handed down to "Abzas Media" staff and other journalists.

The "Abzas Media case" has become a focal point of press freedom concerns in Azerbaijan. In December 2023, investigative journalist Hafiz Babali was arrested, followed by "Abzas Media" director Ulvi Hasanli, editor-in-chief Sevinj Vagifgizi, coordinator Mahammad Kekalov, and journalists Nargiz Absalamova and Elnara Gasimova. "Radio Azadlig" journalist Farid Mehralizade was also arrested in connection with the case. They were accused of various charges, including smuggling.

On June 20, 2025, the Baku Court for Serious Crimes, presided over by Judge Rasim Sadikhov, issued severe sentences against the journalists. Ulvi Hasanli, Sevinj Vagifgizi, Hafiz Babali, and Farid Mehralizade were each sentenced to 9 years of imprisonment. Journalists Nargiz Absalamova and Elnara Gasimova received 8-year sentences, while coordinator Mahammad Kekalov was sentenced to 7 years. The journalists vehemently deny the charges, asserting they are being punished for their critical corruption investigations and journalistic activities. Pro-government media outlets, however, have claimed that these journalists established connections with foreign organizations and foundations, received grants, and in return published anti-government materials.
