On September 3, the Baku Court of Appeals upheld the verdict against young researcher and pacifist Bahruz Samadov, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of high treason.


According to the activist's family, Samadov stated that he will begin a dry hunger strike on September 4 in protest.


The 29-year-old Bahruz Samadov was arrested in Azerbaijan on August 21, 2024, and charged with high treason. According to the investigation, he wrote and translated articles on behalf of Armenian representatives. The charge is based on correspondence between Bahruz Samadov and three women from Armenia. Samadov has categorically denied the charge of high treason. Samadov is known for his criticism of the Azerbaijani authorities, which he has voiced in foreign publications. His defense believes that his "anti-war views" were the reason for his arrest.


On June 23, the Baku Court for Grave Crimes sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
