The President of Voice of America Michael Abramowitz is asking for the release of Ulviyya Ali, a journalist from Azerbaijan. It has been one year since Ulviyya Ali was taken into custody by the authorities in Azerbaijan.


Michael Abramowitz is very concerned about Ulviyya Ali because she was treated badly when the police came to her home in Baku. The police took her things. She was hurt. Ulviyya Ali was first arrested on May 7. Now she is facing charges that could put her in prison for up to eight years.


Michael Abramowitz says that Ulviyya Ali is in jail because of her work as a journalist. He thinks that the government in Azerbaijan is targeting her because she works with media, including the Azerbaijani Service of Voice of America. Michael Abramowitz says that journalists like Ulviyya Ali are very important because they tell people the truth about what's happening in the world.


Ulviyya Ali is still in jail in Baku and her friends are worried about her health. Michael Abramowitz is asking the government in Azerbaijan to make sure Ulviyya Ali is safe and to look at the charges against her in a way. He wants the government to let Ulviyya Ali go soon as possible.


The case against Ulviyya Ali is part of a problem in Azerbaijan. Many people have been arrested, including 12 people who were arrested in connection with Meydan TV. Even though the government in Azerbaijan says that these people were arrested for breaking the law many people think that they were arrested because of their views. There are currently 340 people in jail in Azerbaijan who are considered prisoners.


The international community is watching what happens to Ulviyya Ali closely. They want to see if the government in Azerbaijan will treat her fairly and let her go. The case of Ulviyya Ali is important because it shows how freedom the media has, in Azerbaijan. Voice of America and other international media are paying attention to what happens to Ulviyya Ali.
