Council of Europe's Berset satisfied with cooperation with Azerbaijan, unlike PACE. Talks with President Aliyev on regional peace and key agreements.

As part of his participation in the UN General Assembly session, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset at the United Nations headquarters in New York on September 23.

According to the website of the head of Azerbaijan, during the conversation, issues of the suspension of the activities of the OSCE Minsk Group and the initialing of the agreement on the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington on August 8 were touched upon, and the "importance of the Washington Declaration, signed with the witness of US President Donald Trump," was noted.

Berset stressed that the Council of Europe supports the regional peace agenda.

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe "with satisfaction" recalled his visit to Azerbaijan during COP29, as well as the meetings with Aliyev that took place then and as part of other international events.

During the meeting, an exchange of views was held on cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Council of Europe.

An active dialogue between the leadership of Azerbaijan and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe is being conducted against the backdrop of Baku's refusal to cooperate with the parliamentary assembly and a number of the organization's monitoring structures.

The reason for this was the suspension of the powers of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE in January 2024 due to the country's failure to fulfill its fundamental obligations to the organization, and the failure to invite representatives of the assembly to monitor the elections.
