At the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which took place in China, Azerbaijan's entry into the structure was hindered not only by India but also by Russia, according to the pro-government Azerbaijani news agency APA.
According to diplomatic sources cited by this media outlet, the blocking of Azerbaijan's SCO membership was initiated not only by India, but Russia was also actively involved in the process. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation played a key role in this process.
According to the source, the issue of blocking Azerbaijan's SCO membership was discussed during political consultations between Russia and India, and the parties reached an agreement. However, Russia put India forward while remaining in the shadows.
There is a view that this move by Russia is seen as a sign of disrespect towards China. After all, Beijing, in accordance with the "Shanghai spirit," advocates for the expansion of the organization and supported Azerbaijan's membership.
