Lawyer and human rights activist, former lawyer Namizad Safarov, known for his active civic position, has been detained in Azerbaijan. Pro-government media report that Safarov is suspected of 'fraud'.

Namizad Safarov, a lawyer and human rights activist, was detained on the afternoon of December 9, his relatives reported.

'Namizad Safarov was detained by people in plain clothes and taken away in an unknown direction,' a relative said.

'Preliminary, the reason for his (Namizad Safarov's) detention was complaints related to fraud,' the pro-government agency APA, in turn, reported.

Namizad Safarov is known for his active civic stance, public, and human rights activities.

He practiced law since the early 1990s. However, in 2005, Safarov was excluded from the Bar Association, and he himself linked this decision to his criticism of the leadership of that structure.

Safarov was actively involved in socio-political activities, participating in the creation of the National Council of Democratic Forces in 2013.

In 2024, Safarov became a member of the 'Azerbaijan People's Parliament', established by political emigrants abroad.
