Journalist Ulviyya Ali's detention in Azerbaijan is extended until Dec 27 in the Meydan TV case. Accused of smuggling, Ali used a poem in court to dispute the charges, which she calls irrelevant. The high-profile case now involves 12 suspects. Get the full details on the extension and the case context.

On November 26, the Khatai District Court of Baku granted the investigative body's request and extended Ulviyya Ali's pretrial detention for another 1 month, her relatives reported.

The journalist's detention was extended until December 27.

Ulviyya Ali considered speaking in her own defense pointless.

Instead, the journalist recited a poem about a rooster.

"This poem has as much relation to the court as the accusation against me," said Ali.

Journalist Ulviyya Ali (Guliyeva) was detained and arrested in May as a defendant in the Meydan TV case. She rejected the smuggling charge and noted that she does not cooperate with that publication.

The Meydan TV case was initiated in December 2024, when six journalists were detained, and then arrested and charged with currency smuggling by a group of persons in collusion. They linked the criminal case to their professional activities. By August 2025, 11 people had been arrested in the Meydan TV case.

In late August, it became known that the investigation was complete, and a 12th suspect appeared in the case - photojournalist Ahmed Mukhtar. Additionally, the arrested journalists were charged with new accusations under seven more criminal articles.
