After the suicide of DSX soldier Huseyn Huseynov, his commander, Captain Mahmud Safaraliyev, accused of repeated abuse and threats, was controversially released by the Jalilabad Military Court. The Military Prosecutor's Office is appealing the decision. Read about the case and military accountability.

On November 15, Huseyn Huseynov, a State Border Service (DSX) soldier stationed in the Bilasuvar district, killed himself.

Reports say the soldier shot himself after Captain Mahmud Safaraliyev, his commander, repeatedly insulted, menaced, and physically pressured him.

After the event, Captain Safaraliyev was arrested and charged. On November 27, the Military Prosecutor's Office asked the Jalilabad Military Court to keep him in pre-trial detention.

The Jalilabad Military Court chose to release Captain Safaraliyev. The DSX had earlier fired Safaraliyev because of past illegal actions against soldiers.

The captain's release has upset the dead soldier’s family. The Military Prosecutor's Office has now appealed the court's decision, and the Shirvan Court of Appeal will look at the case.
