Azerbaijan is breaking ties with the European Parliament

This is a deal because it shows that Azerbaijan and the European Parliament are not getting along. Azerbaijans Milli Majlis, which is like a group of lawmakers decided to stop working with the European Parliament. They are also stopping their work with the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee. They want to leave the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly.

All of this happened because the European Parliament made a decision on April 30. This decision was about helping Armenia become more democratic and a part of Europe. It also said some things that Azerbaijan did not like. For example it said that Azerbaijan should let some Armenian people out of jail and that they should let other Armenians move back to the Karabakh region. Azerbaijan does not think these people should be let out of jail because they think they are criminals and terrorists.

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs was very upset about this decision. They called the EU Ambassador, Mariyana Kuyuncic. Gave her a formal note of protest. Azerbaijan says that the Armenians who left the Karabakh region in 2023 did so because they wanted to even though Azerbaijan offered to help them stay. Azerbaijan thinks the European Parliament is interfering with their business. This is not okay.

The Milli Majlis was very clear about how they feel. They said that the European Parliament is a place where people do not like Azerbaijan and they do not like Muslims. They think the European Parliament has been saying things about Azerbaijan for a long time and that they are being influenced by groups that want to cause trouble in the region.

Nahid Jafarov, who used to be a diplomat says that President Ilham Aliyev likes to work with countries in Europe instead of with the European Union as a whole. Elman Fattah, who is in charge of the Caspian Research and Analysis Center thinks that Azerbaijan is doing this to stop the European Union from being too hard on them. If the European Union wants to punish Azerbaijan all of the countries in the union have to agree. If Azerbaijan has good relationships with some of these countries they will not want to punish Azerbaijan. So Azerbaijan is safe long as they have friends in Europe.

Now the Milli Majlis is making a special group to figure out how to leave the European Parliament. It is not clear what will happen with Azerbaijan and the European Union. Azerbaijan is stopping their work with the European Parliament but they are still going to work with some European countries. Azerbaijan is just changing the way they work with Europe so it is better for them.
